Utah Hemp Farmers Growing Strains Named After Obama and Trump

Farmers in Utah have begun growing hemp following the legalization of the crop late last year, including strains of the plant with names featuring a decidedly political twist. One varietal, Obama, is named for former President Barak Obama, who was in office when the 2014 Farm Bill that authorized hemp research pilot programs was signed into law. Another strain, Trump, is also named for a president that figures prominently in hemp history. President Donald Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill in December, which legalized the crop as an agricultural commodity in the United States. Marijuana Legalization Bill Passes in Guam Senate, Heads to Governor’s Desk

Guam just took a potentially huge step toward fully legalizing the recreational use of marijuana. Key lawmakers voted today on a new legalization bill. And as with many other legalization bills, this piece of legislation would establish a framework in which Guam could regulate and tax marijuana sales. Lawmakers have been working on the bill for some time. And recently, the bill underwent a series of amendments before going to the senate for today’s vote. Ultimately, Bill 32-35 pas...

Johns Hopkins Launches Center For Psychedelic And Consciousness Research

One of the United States’ most respected medical institutions has announced that it will be sinking its teeth into the field of psychedelics research. Johns Hopkins University will form the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research , funded by $17 million in donations from private sources. It may well be the largest research facility in the world to focus on the study of psychedelics. “Our scientists have shown that psychedelics have real potential as medicine, and this new center will help us explore that potential,” said Paul B. Rothman, who is the dean of the medical faculty at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Medicine. The school has maintained a group to research psychedelics since 2000, but this latest move will allow it to conduct more substantial investigations. Primary among its study priorities will be the effects of psilocybin on the brain and body — specifically, to see whether the substance could be of help in treating health conditions like opioid addiction...
