Utah Hemp Farmers Growing Strains Named After Obama and Trump

Farmers in Utah have begun growing hemp following the legalization of the crop late last year, including strains of the plant with names featuring a decidedly political twist. One varietal, Obama, is named for former President Barak Obama, who was in office when the 2014 Farm Bill that authorized hemp research pilot programs was signed into law. Another strain, Trump, is also named for a president that figures prominently in hemp history. President Donald Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill in December, which legalized the crop as an agricultural commodity in the United States. Farmer Kenny McFarland grew hemp for the first time this year, planting clones on eight acres of his farm in Weber County. Florida and medical marijuana just aren’t quite meshing right  now, but we’re working on getting it all straight soon: “A Florida appellate court ruled that the state’s medical cannabis licensing system is unconstitutional, setting the stage for greatly expanded business opportunities in one of the country’s fastest-growing markets. Found unconstitutional were legislative measures that imposed license caps and vertical integration. The takeaway here is that while the decision will most likely be appealed to the Florida Supreme Court, this opens the door to the possibility of the Florida market opening up to more players, with the barriers to entry being lowered, ” states Sally Peebles, a cannabis attorney with Vicente Sederberg LLP in Florida and member of the Florida Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee. Canadians May Be Able To Purchase Edibles and Topicals By December

Cannabis edible and topical products will be available to Canadian consumers by the middle of December, according to media reports. Rules to regulate the products are expected to be released by the federal health agency Health Canada on Friday and would go into effect on October 17, one year after Canada legalized cannabis with the passage of Bill C-45 . Initial regulations only included provisions that allowed the sale of cannabis flower and oils. Once the new regulations for cannabis edibles and topicals go into effect in October, manufacturers would be given 60 days to implement them before products go on sale in December. Sources speaking with CTV News on the condition of anonymity revealed that the regulations are expected to limit the amount of THC in edible products to 10 milligrams per package.
